NMW Floating Flywheel Solution

Dual Mass Flywheels (DMF) have been in widespread usage since the late 1980’s, and they have been giving trouble since year one. The dual mass flywheel was developed to reduce torsional oscillation of the drivetrain, and is specified primarily as a noise, vibration, and harshness countermeasure… But it has also been called a solution without a problem.

While more and more people want diesel engines that are as quiet and smooth as petrol, the switch to dual mass flywheels has for many been a step too far.

Many of your customers may recognise some of the symptons of a degrading dual mass flywheel

  1. Excessive vibration, sometimes worse on overrun.
  2. Juddering
  3. Clunking between accelleration and decelleration
  4. Clutch may have good bite, but feel “rubbery.”
  5. Rattling

However, if you are a mechanic, they usually don’t land at your door until the damage has been done and the DMF is in bits.

Instead of sourcing a new DMF,and leaving them open to a repeat of the episode futher down the line – why not call Newry Motor Works, a subsiduary of Exact Precision Engineering and Fabrication Ltd?

Floating Flywheel Fixation Process

  • Disassembly -
  • Machine-facing on Lathe of both internal faces of flywheel
  • Vertical Drilling and Tapping to add flush-finished counter-sunk high-tensile bolts
  • Manufacture of required number of bespoke precision-made spacers.
  • Re-assembly – using thread engagement compound to ensure optimum durability
  • Balancing of completed single-mass unit to eliminate vibration and ensure flywheel is fit for purpose.

From start to finish this process takes up to 20 hours of precision engineering and costs £300- £500 plus, depending on the complexity of the model of flywheel.

As an additional new service, Exact can now collect and return your flywheel within a short space of time.

Got a Shogun flywheel remade with these men and turned out perfect. Was half the price of the original and they have guaranteed it for 5 years! Mitsubishi wouldn’t guarantee it for 5 hours!
Super job, professional service, highly recommended.
